Don’t Sleep On It
Every year, thousands of albums are released. While it would be insane for me to listen to every single one of them, the ones I do are usually pretty great (in my opinion). It just sucks that some of the best albums being released are also being ignored. Even though some of them have had a good starting run, they quickly got pushed aside whilst acts like Katy Perry or The Pussycat Dolls spend weeks at the top with their terrible music.
Or, in lots of cases, the albums are critically lauded and cherished, but are still ignored. It’s really a sad thing to see people who showcase some truly amazing talent go totally unnoticed. So, here is a list of albums that I feel haven’t received the attention they truly deserve. Most of them are recent, but some date back a while.
Dragonette’s Galore
Released in early 2007, Dragonette had already released an EP that sampled their sound and their first single, “I Get Around”, which were both pretty much ignored. Galore, their full-length debut, is one of those rare pop albums that isn’t any different from the rest initially, but somehow sounds incredible regardless of that fact.
It was, of course, ignored. Even though Popjustice pushed Dragonette, their album, and their singles like mad (they even wrote a huge post about how they truly deserve success), the band remained relatively underground. Luckily, as of a couple months ago, people have started noticing them more.
Roisin Murphy’s Ruby Blue
Really, there is no reason why this album should have been ignored like it was. It literally tanked, regardless of how close it was to perfection. Murphy was being a little self indulgent, but the album was so gorgeous that it shouldn’t have mattered.
But the same goes for her work as one half of Moloko. They had two massive hits, but other than that, they were relatively quiet, especially in their early days. Since the release of this album, Murphy has released another amazing, yet more likely to be noticed, album called Overpowered. It, too, has not received the success it deserves.
Hercules & Love Affair
Why? Like, really, why? Hercules & Love Affair has easily become one of the most original voices in dance music. While disco has always been a prominent component to a lot of dance music recently, no one has dared make an entire album that sounds identical to disco music of the 1970’s, minus the cheese.
The album, which is only 10 songs (the American release has some bonus tracks, though) is an immaculate collection of emotional, passionate music and lyrics. Of course, no one really cares abnout that stuff, hence why it has yet to make a significant impact.
Kate Havenvik’s Melankton
The fact that this album didn’t do very well shocks me. Since its release in the U.K. in 2006, 5 of its song have been featured on the ABC hit show Grey’s Anatomy, Havnevik wrote a song specifically for the show’s second season finale, and contributed a song that has yet to see an album release for the show as well. That’s 7 songs heard by millions.
The album is a great combination of classical music and electronic music, and sounds like an album AIR would make with Imogen Heap, Bjork, and Goldfrapp. All the right elements are here, and still, two years later, this album has yet to see a chart position.
I could go on for pages about this, as I have more, but that will be in another post. I urge anyone and everyone to check out these albums because, really, they are great.

I absolutely adore Roisin Murphy’s music, especially with Moloko. Yes they had a big hit or two but I don’t like them that much, I prefer the album tracks to the singles.
I’ll be sure to check out the other bands you mention, they sound like my kind of music.
